- Spring (April to June): This is prime time, no doubt about it. The ground has typically dried out from those winter rains, but we haven't quite hit the really scorching summer heat yet. Temperatures are mild, and you usually get a nice balance of sun and moderate humidity. This lets the stucco cure slowly and evenly, which is exactly what you want for maximum strength and hardly any cracking.
- Early Fall (September to October): Another fantastic window. The summer heat has finally broken, but those heavy winter rains haven't really kicked in yet. Again, you get those mild temperatures and lower humidity, which creates perfect curing conditions.
Now, I know life happens, and sometimes you just can't pick the perfect season. We've certainly done plenty of stucco work outside these ideal windows, but it often means a lot more careful planning and sometimes some specialized techniques to handle whatever the conditions throw at us. Weather Conditions That Can Mess With Stucco Work
Let's talk about what we're always keeping an eye out for:
- Rain: This is the big one, the absolute deal-breaker. You just can't apply stucco in the rain, plain and simple. It washes away the material, thins out the mix, and stops proper adhesion and curing. Even after it rains, the surface underneath needs to be bone dry. Our winter deluges, especially those atmospheric river events we get, make stucco work practically impossible for weeks on end.
- Extreme Heat: When it gets really hot, say above 90°F, stucco can dry way too fast. This rapid drying often leads to shrinkage cracks and a weaker finish. We might have to mist the walls or use special additives to slow the curing down a bit.
- Freezing Temperatures: Stucco has to cure above freezing. Also, check for any discoloration or bulging; that could mean water is getting in where it shouldn't.
- Manage Water: This is absolutely critical. Make sure your gutters are clean and actually directing water away from your foundation. Double-check that your sprinklers aren't constantly drenching your stucco walls. Water is stucco's biggest enemy if it manages to get behind the finish.
